These foot plates are wider than the other guys, the larger foot bed is more stable and helps with balance no matter how big or small the user's feet are. 

Another nice benefit of the foot plate design is that it provides two different positions to mount your arch straps; the tradition position which is on the top of the foot bed (similar to how you mount your toe straps, or secondly, you can mount them on the lower portion of the foot plate behind the heel. 

The secondary mounting position tends to hold your heels more securely in place, and also offers additional security and safety benefits due to the virtually indestructible geometry.
